The city's slogans are "The end of the Santa Fe Trail" and "Welcome to
Friendly El Monte." The history says that between the 1770 and 1830,
missionaries and Spanish soldiers stopped here and named the area, 'El Monte’,
which means 'meadow or marsh' or 'the wooded place’. El Monte has maintained a
reputation of having “business friendly attitude”. The city has attracted
various commercial and retail businesses, as well as international corporations
through its foreign trade zone. Longo Toyota, the largest Toyota car dealer in
the United States is situated in El Monte.

El Monte is a city, situated in Los Angeles County, California, United
States. It is considered as a suburb of Los Angeles and lies in the San Gabriel
Valley region. The city is located at 34°4′24″N, 118°1′39″W (34.073276,
-118.027491) and 283 feet above the sea level. According to the United States
Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 9.7 square miles (25.1 km²). As per
the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 115,965. As of 2002, El
Monte is the 44th largest city in California and 191st largest city in the
United States. It is also the ninth largest city in Los Angeles County.
